For a quarter of a century, this organization has fostered connections between dance studios and artists across continents, creating opportunities for collaboration and cultural exchange that transcend geographical boundaries. It’s beautiful to see how Dance the Magic has cultivated a space where dancers can not only hone their craft but also build relationships and share perspectives, something that resonates deeply with my own philosophy of embracing strength, confidence, and connection. Seeing the organization thrive alongside initiatives like the [Award-winning dance drama ‘MULAN’ makes its New York debut this September] showcases the incredible reach and appreciation for dance narratives across different cultural landscapes. And with Rambert Grades launching [Rambert Grades launches online syllabus training for teachers worldwide], the dedication to nurturing and developing dance talent globally is clear. This isn’t just about performances; it’s about building a global dance community.
The article rightly points to the “magic” created by these events, and I believe that magic lies in the shared vulnerability and discipline inherent in dance. Whether I'm feeling empowered on the pole, confident in my fitness routine, or nurturing my family at home, it's about pushing my own boundaries and finding strength within. Dance, in all its forms, demands dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to be seen – and to see others. The connections forged through Dance the Magic's events offer dancers a chance to experience that vulnerability on a larger scale, to learn from diverse approaches to movement and storytelling, and to return home with a renewed sense of purpose and a broader understanding of the world. It's a ripple effect; the confidence gained on stage translates into the confidence to tackle challenges in all aspects of life, which is something I preach to all the women I work with. The intersection of art and community is undeniably powerful.
Beyond the technical aspects of dance training, these international collaborations provide invaluable opportunities for cultural understanding. Every studio brings its unique traditions, styles, and perspectives to the table, enriching the experiences of all involved. It’s a living embodiment of empathy and respect, reminding us that despite our differences, we are all connected through a shared humanity. This resonates profoundly with my own journey of self-discovery; embracing my femininity, my strength, and my cultural heritage – all while striving to empower others to do the same. The BAAND Together Dance Festival, [BAAND Together Dance Festival returns for sixth year in Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City], exemplifies this vibrant celebration of diversity within the dance world and further emphasises the importance of platforms like Dance the Magic. It’s a vital reminder that dance isn't just about steps and technique; it’s about sharing stories, building bridges, and celebrating the beauty of human expression in its myriad forms.
Looking ahead, it’s fascinating to consider how Dance the Magic will continue to evolve in an increasingly interconnected world. As technology advances and travel becomes more accessible, we can anticipate even greater opportunities for cross-cultural exchange and collaboration. The rise of online platforms and virtual performances could potentially expand the reach of these events, making them accessible to even more dancers around the globe. But the core value – the human connection fostered through shared artistic experience – will remain paramount. The question then becomes, how can we best leverage these advancements to nurture authentic relationships and ensure that these global dance communities continue to thrive, inspiring future generations to embrace their own unique voices and celebrate the power of movement?
Dance the Magic, the company known for creating world class performance opportunities and creating magic is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. To look back over the global connections the company has had over the years, we chatted with five dance studios from around the world that have participated in Dance the Magic events to get their thoughts and memories on how dancers came together through these experiences to share cultures and build connections.
What has been your dancers’ experience connecting with others from around the world?
Yukinori from Makana Produce, an event company based in Machida City, Tokyo shares, “I remember one young participant practicing her self-introduction in English the night before the performance. It was such a heartwarming moment, and to me, it symbolized exactly the kind of tour experience I hope to create.”
Isabella from Pulse Studios Australia, a community-focused dance studio, says, “One of the most beautiful parts of the experience was watching our dancers realize how universal dance really is. Despite coming from different countries and backgrounds, everyone connected through a shared love of performing and creativity. Our students formed friendships, supported one another backstage and truly felt part of something much bigger than themselves.”
What inspired your studio to participate in a Dance the Magic event?
Power in Dance based in South Africa and Malta, an international dance collective, brings dancers together for unique global performance experiences and dance training. With this as their goal, they mention that “Dance the Magic perfectly aligns with our vision of uniting dancers from different parts of the world and giving them the chance to be part of something bigger than themselves.” They are proud to have come back for six experiences with Dance the Magic.
Studio9 and FBR Academia, located in the heart of Panama, take pride in “Moms and Daughters” programs, where families dance together on stages around the world, creating memories that last a lifetime. They add, “The fact that Dance the Magic is a family-owned business deeply resonated with our studio’s values. It felt like a natural partnership built on heart and excellence.”
Have you noticed any personal or artistic growth in your dancers during/after attending?
“The growth is both personal and artistic,” Power in Dance shares. “Dancers step out of their comfort zones, adapt quickly, and learn to trust not only themselves but each other, often meeting their teammates in person for the first time just days before performing together.”
Reflections Academy of Dance, a vibrant studio based in Victoria, Australia, add, “We noticed a renewed sense of self and excitement about what dance can offer them in the future. Experiencing dance on such a large scale, performing in a parade setting and working closely with Jennilee Barr [from Dance the Magic] sparked a level of passion and motivation that simply can’t be replicated in a regular studio environment.”
Do you have a favorite memory from your experience?
“One of the most moving experiences is witnessing the shared journey of our mothers and daughters,” Studio9 and FBR Academia note. “Seeing a mother and her teenage daughter backstage, both nervous and excited, and then watching them perform together at Disney is unforgettable. Seeing the tears of joy and the smiles of accomplishment after the final bow is something I will always carry with me.”
What would you say to other studios considering Dance the Magic in the future?
“You would be crazy not to do it. It was by far the best and most special experience our dancers will remember for the rest of their lives,” Pulse Studios Australia reflect. “We did a lot throughout our USA tour dancing across different locations, and our students, parents and teachers all unanimously agreed that the parade day and Dance the Magic experience was the absolute highlight.”
After three experiences with Dance the Magic, Reflections Academy of Dance, is grateful that “from the very beginning, you’re supported by an incredible team who are there to answer every question, big or small. They ensure you feel completely prepared, leaving no detail overlooked so each studio can have the best possible experience. The communication is personal and genuine, you always feel like you have someone right there when you need them.”
Makana Produce ends on a high note, adding, “To future participants, I would say this: The value of this experience goes far beyond the cost. Have the courage to pursue a view that can only be seen by those willing to take the climb. Experiences like this truly have the power to change lives.”
