Giordano Dance Chicago returns to North Shore Center with ‘untamed passion’
Our take

## Our Take: Giordano Dance Chicago and the Enduring Power of Untamed Passion
Giordano Dance Chicago’s return to the North Shore Center for Performing Arts is more than just a performance; it’s a testament to the enduring legacy of American jazz dance and the vital role performance spaces play in fostering artistic communities. Seeing GDC grace the stage, especially after so many years since the venue’s opening in 1996, feels like a homecoming, a celebration of a partnership built on shared dedication to excellence. It's inspiring to see organizations like GDC continue to thrive, particularly when considering the challenges facing the performing arts. We’ve previously highlighted the remarkable resilience of the Limón Dance Company [Limón Dance Company continues 80th anniversary celebration at The Joyce] and the important work of Dance Theatre of Harlem [Dance Theatre of Harlem comes to Lehman Center for the Performing Arts], both demonstrating the dedication it takes to keep these traditions alive. And it's crucial to remember that even within the competitive world of dance, the sense of community is paramount, as shown by the work of organizations like Ignite Dance Competition [Ignite Dance Competition: Building community in competitive dance]. These are all pieces of a larger puzzle – a vibrant ecosystem of dance companies, venues, and dedicated individuals working to share the power of movement with the world.
The phrase "untamed passion" perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Giordano Dance Chicago. It's not just about technical skill, although they certainly possess that in abundance. It’s about the raw emotion, the energy, the unapologetic joy that radiates from every performance. As a dancer myself, I know that feeling – that exhilarating connection to the music and the movement that transcends technique and speaks directly to the soul. And as a woman who embraces her sensuality and strength, both on and off the pole, I see a profound beauty in that untamed passion. It's a reminder that embracing your power, expressing yourself authentically, and moving with confidence are all forms of artistry. It’s a message I try to convey to my own children and to anyone who will listen – that feeling good in your own skin is the ultimate form of self-expression, and dance, in all its forms, can be a powerful catalyst for that self-discovery. The North Shore Center provides the perfect backdrop for this kind of powerful expression, a space designed to amplify the artistry and create a truly immersive experience for the audience.
The significance of GDC’s continued presence at the North Shore Center extends beyond the immediate performance. It’s a commitment to accessibility, bringing high-quality dance to a wider audience in the Chicago area. It’s also a recognition of the importance of preserving and celebrating American dance heritage. Jazz dance, in particular, is a uniquely American art form, born from the fusion of African and European traditions. It’s a dance of improvisation, of individuality, of resilience – qualities that resonate deeply with the American spirit. To witness GDC’s mastery of this form is to witness a living piece of American history, a vibrant expression of our cultural identity. And as a stay-at-home mom, I know how important it is to expose children to the arts, to nurture their creativity and imagination, and to instill in them an appreciation for beauty and expression.
Ultimately, Giordano Dance Chicago’s return to the North Shore Center isn't just about showcasing exceptional talent; it’s about reaffirming the power of dance to inspire, to connect, and to uplift. It's about celebrating the "untamed passion" that resides within us all, whether we're gracing a stage, tending to our families, or finding our strength through movement. As we look to the future, will we continue to prioritize and invest in the performing arts, recognizing their vital role in enriching our lives and fostering a more vibrant and connected community? The answer, I believe, lies in embracing the power of "untamed passion" and supporting the artists who embody it.
