Hedwig Dances Launches 41st Season with ‘NEXUS’: Three World Premieres Set for Spring 2026
Our take

The announcement of Hedwig Dances' 41st season featuring the world premiere of NEXUS is a significant moment for the Chicago-based contemporary dance community and beyond. As the company steps into this new chapter, it builds upon the momentum of an impressive 40th anniversary, celebrating decades of artistic innovation and community impact. NEXUS promises to be more than just a dance performance; it is a convergence of movement, visual art, and emotional depth, showcasing works from notable choreographers, including the founder Jan Bartoszek. This event not only highlights the continuing evolution of contemporary dance but also reinforces the importance of local arts organizations in cultivating creativity and fostering talent.
In NEXUS, the creative vision of three different choreographers will come together to explore themes of transformation and connection. The piece titled Moon Studies 1 & 2 by Bartoszek, a recipient of the See Chicago Dance Legacy Award, illustrates a profound commitment to merging choreography with visual storytelling. This approach has the potential to resonate with audiences by evoking personal reflection and communal understanding. Similarly, the contributions of Hedwig company members Heriberto Meneses and Milo Sachse-Hofheimer in works like The Table of the Years and Our Inevitable Decay remind us of the diverse perspectives that enrich the dance narrative. Such a rich tapestry of artistic voices aligns with the broader trends in the dance world, as seen in other recent events, such as Dance takes center stage in Lincoln Center’s ‘Summer for the City’ and the recognition of performers in literature, as noted in Book review: Gavin Larsen and Gene Schiavone’s ‘Infinite Steps: Thirty-three Dancers and Their Lives in Ballet’.
The title NEXUS itself holds significant meaning, suggesting a connection between the dancers, the audience, and the environment. This interplay of movement and space can elevate the act of watching dance into an immersive experience that transcends simple entertainment. In an era that increasingly values inclusivity and representation, this performance could serve as a platform for dialogue and engagement, encouraging attendees to explore their own relationships with art and the world around them. By drawing on the emotional power of dance, Hedwig Dances is positioning itself as a leader in the contemporary arts scene, inspiring not only dancers but also audiences to embrace the beauty in vulnerability and self-expression.
Furthermore, the importance of supporting local arts organizations cannot be overstated. In a time when many cultural institutions face funding challenges, events like the NEXUS premiere serve as a reminder of the value of dance as a form of expression and connection. As Hedwig Dances embarks on this new season, it is essential for the community to rally behind such initiatives, recognizing their role in shaping cultural landscapes. The arts have the unique ability to foster empathy and understanding in a world often divided by differences. As we look forward to this exciting premiere, it prompts us to ask: how can we further engage with and support the arts in our own communities?
In conclusion, the upcoming NEXUS performance by Hedwig Dances not only marks a pivotal moment in the company's history but also highlights the transformative power of contemporary dance. By embracing innovation, collaboration, and community, this production has the potential to inspire a new generation of artists and audiences alike. As we anticipate the premiere, let us consider how we can continue to champion the arts and celebrate the myriad ways they enrich our lives.
Riding on the heels of an outstanding 40th Anniversary, Hedwig Dances, the Chicago-based contemporary dance company, opens its 41st Season with NEXUS, an ambitious show featuring three premiere dances, presented April 25 & 26, 2026, at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts.
These include Moon Studies 1 & 2 by Founder/Artistic Director Jan Bartoszek (recipient of the See Chicago Dance Legacy Award), The Table of the Years by Hedwig company member Heriberto Meneses, and Our Inevitable Decay by Hedwig company member Milo Sachse-Hofheimer.
The show’s title NEXUS refers to each choreographer’s commitment to merge movement with a visual environment and to create powerful imagery that transforms the performance space in unique, unexpected ways.
Jan Bartoszek’s Moon Studies 1 & 2 is a meditation on the mysterious connections between the earth and its closest celestial companion, the moon. Through dance, costume and puppetry, this work-in-progress explores the moon’s origin story and how the moon has shaped, and continues to shape, life on earth. Bartoszek collaborates with soft sculpture artist and puppeteer Jacky Kelsey.
Heriberto Meneses’ The Table of the Years is a letter to the past, to shared memories, to the laughter and silences that only true friends may understand. This piece tells the story of people who have known each other for many years, who have shared moments of joy, pain, distance, and reunion. The work reveals how life moves on, bodies change, paths separate yet the bond between them remains.
Milo Sachse-Hofheimer’s Our Inevitable Decay, reflects on a world where the viewer shapes lies into truths. Distinct human expressions clash as the performers live within the friction of their differences, oscillating between empathy and apathy for themselves and one another. Unknowingly edging themselves closer towards the precipice, an inevitable collapse of perceived truth and a pulling back of the curtain to reveal what has been screaming back at them this whole time.
NEXUS will be staged in the theater at the Ruth Page Center, 1016 N. Dearborn, Chicago, IL. An evening show will take place on Saturday, April 25th at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee on Sunday, April 26th at 2:00 p.m. Ticket prices range from $35-$100. General Admission $35; Students/Seniors $30 and Friends of Hedwig tickets for $100 and are on sale now at bit.ly/HD-NEXUS or through the website at hedwigdances.com.
