NCCAkron Continues ‘Making Moves’ National Tour

The National Center for Choreography–Akron (NCCAkron) is making waves as it continues its 'Making Moves' national tour, part of its 10th-anniversary programming. This initiative is particularly poignant in a time when the arts community faces unprecedented challenges. By hosting a series of free public events, NCCAkron is not only celebrating its decade-long legacy but also fostering crucial dialogues around labor, creativity, and community engagement among artists and arts workers. As the hub for dance research and development in the U.S., NCCAkron is positioned to lead these conversations, as highlighted in their recent initiatives such as NCCAkron Launches 18-Month 10th Anniversary Celebration and NCCAkron Celebrates 10th Anniversary with “Dance Party Through the Decades”.

The 'Making Moves' tour serves as an essential platform for artists to reflect on their practices and the broader implications of their work within the arts ecosystem. The events scheduled in cities like Miami, Memphis, Boston, and Houston offer not just a showcase of talent but also an exploration of adaptive thinking in the arts. It is vital for artists to not only create but also to engage with the frameworks that support their work. This reimagining of labor is particularly relevant as artists navigate a post-pandemic landscape where traditional modes of engagement and support have shifted. The focus on applying creative practices to administrative operations is a forward-thinking approach that could redefine how we view the intersection of art and labor.

Moreover, the initiative's emphasis on community engagement is commendable. By making these events free to the public, NCCAkron is breaking down barriers and inviting a diverse audience to participate in the conversation about the future of dance and choreography. This inclusive approach is essential for building a robust arts ecosystem that reflects the diverse voices within it. As a former strip tease dancer and now a fitness advocate, I can personally attest to the power of community and body positivity in the arts. Dance, in all its forms, has the ability to empower individuals and foster a sense of belonging, which is precisely what NCCAkron aims to achieve through this tour.

As we consider the implications of the 'Making Moves' national tour, it is vital to reflect on the role of arts organizations in our communities. In a world where many people are grappling with feelings of isolation and disconnection, initiatives like this remind us of the importance of creativity and expression in promoting mental health and well-being. The arts have the power to unite us, to challenge societal norms, and to inspire us to embrace our bodies and identities fully.

Looking ahead, one must ponder how this tour will influence the broader arts landscape. Will it inspire similar initiatives across the nation, encouraging more organizations to prioritize community engagement and adaptive practices? As we witness the unfolding of these events, the potential for transformation within the arts ecosystem is immense. With the right support and dialogue, we can build a future where creativity flourishes, and every artist feels valued and empowered to make their mark on the world.

As part of its 10th anniversary programming, the National Center for Choreography–Akron (NCCAkron) continues its Making Moves national tour, a series of free public events designed to spark dialogue and reimagine labor among artists and arts workers. The local and national case studies explore themes of arts ecosystem building, adaptive thinking, and applying creative practices to administrative operations. The first leg of the 2026 tour includes events in Miami, FL (March 4), Memphis, TN (April 25), Boston, MA (May 3), and Houston TX (past, Jan 14).

NCCAkron is one of only two national centers for choreography in the U.S., a research and development hub for dance. NCCAkron is currently celebrating 10 years of serving as a connector and cultural matchmaker for those looking to experiment with dance. NCCAkron has previously hosted Making Moves events in Chicago, IL; New York, NY; Akron, OH; Nashville, TN; and Seattle, WA.

An inspiration for these national arts events, Artists on Creative Administration: A Workbook from the National Center for Choreography is an arts and creative life book published in 2024 by The University of Akron Press. Edited by artist/cultural strategist Tonya Lockyer (Suquamish, WA) this book features essays from and interviews with 30 artists and advocates from the dance and performing arts worlds, sharing first-hand stories of creative administration in action through case studies, interviews, life tools, and experiments. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at Making Moves events.

“Since publishing Artists on Creative Administration, the response has been phenomenal. But perhaps most important, we’ve come to realize the book can be a conversation starter about creative labor, business models, and doing what dancers do best: adapting to the moment,” reflects Christy Bolingbroke, NCCAkron Executive/Artistic Director.  “Staging these conversations in dance hubs across the U.S. allows us to highlight many more of the lived experiences and stories across our field, and to add their case studies to this collection of ongoing research.”

Speakers for individual cities/events will be announced at a later date.

Making Moves events are free to attend with RSVP. Visit https://www.nccakron.org/tenthanniversary to RSVP to a city near you.

For those unable to attend in person, All Making Moves events are recorded and published online.
