Our take

The resurgence of live music and dance as a communal celebration is something that truly warms my heart, and Performa/Dance’s *Bluegrass Junction* feels like a vital step in that direction. It's so refreshing to see a production actively embracing Americana and recognizing the power of shared experience—a time when music and movement weren’t just entertainment, but a cornerstone of community life. We’ve seen a shift lately, a rediscovery of the roots of performance, and this echoes the sentiments explored in the [NCCAkron releases seventh season of ‘Inside the Dancer’s Studio’ podcast]—a testament to the ongoing exploration of the creative process and the evolution of dance forms. It’s wonderful to see institutions like Performa/Dance actively contributing to this revitalization, reminding us that art isn’t just about pushing boundaries, but also about honoring tradition and connecting with our shared heritage. And speaking of honoring tradition, the appointment of Christopher Charles McDaniel as Artistic Director of Dances Patrelle, [Christopher Charles McDaniel appointed Artistic Director of Dances Patrelle], underscores the importance of leadership in preserving and reimagining classic dance forms, ensuring they continue to resonate with new audiences.
What truly excites me about *Bluegrass Junction* is the intentional intersection of music and dance. It’s not just about having a band play while dancers perform; it’s about a heartfelt dialogue between the two disciplines, a conversation that celebrates the human experience. As someone who finds so much power in movement—whether it's the controlled precision of pole work, the strength built through fitness routines, or the joy of simply feeling good in my own skin—I recognize the profound connection between our bodies and our emotions. And dance, in all its forms, is a beautiful expression of that connection. I believe wholeheartedly that movement is medicine, and experiencing live performance, particularly something rooted in shared cultural heritage, is a powerful dose indeed. The inclusion of Tim Eriksen and Wayside Bluegrass suggests a rich tapestry of musical styles, providing fertile ground for Jennifer Hart's choreography to flourish and bring this Americana story to life.
Beyond the immediate artistic merit of *Bluegrass Junction*, this production speaks to a larger cultural need. We live in a world that often feels fragmented and isolating. Finding opportunities to come together, to clap our hands, stomp our feet, and share in a collective experience is more important than ever. As a stay-at-home mom, I understand the value of community. It's about supporting each other, celebrating milestones, and finding joy in the everyday moments. And as a fitness enthusiast, I know that feeling connected to something larger than yourself is essential for both physical and mental well-being. This production, with its emphasis on shared experience and artistic expression, embodies that spirit of connection. The Harkness Dance Center's upcoming season, [Harkness Dance Center announces “Home: Departure and Return” for 2026/27 Mainstage Season], also highlights a focus on themes of belonging and journeys, indicating a broader trend in the dance world toward exploring the human condition and our place within it.
Ultimately, *Bluegrass Junction* represents a hopeful reminder of the power of art to unite us, to heal us, and to celebrate the beauty of the human spirit. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of Americana and a vibrant expression of the creative spirit. I’m incredibly excited to see how Jennifer Hart’s choreography interprets this rich musical landscape and what stories it will tell. As we continue to navigate an ever-changing world, will we continue to prioritize these shared experiences and the vital role that music and dance play in fostering community and celebrating our collective humanity?
Clap your hands, stomp your feet, and join the party as Performa/Dance brings back to the stage Bluegrass Junction, with special musical guests – international singer and songwriter Tim Eriksen and Austin’s own Wayside Bluegrass – in a heartfelt intersection of music and dance. Award-winning choreographer Jennifer Hart invites you to celebrate an important piece of Americana – a time when live music and dance brought communities together to celebrate the human experience and the important phases of life.
“Bluegrass Junction is about convening and strengthening our community bonds in times of happiness and sorrow,” Hart explained. “It is about the simple pleasures of music and movement, which when married lift the spirit and give us hope. This engaging dance work celebrates the deep love we have for family, friends, intimate partners, and life itself. Bluegrass Junction explores the cycle of life and emphasizes friendship, community, and joy, taking us out of the isolation and loneliness that is part of our current lives. Through our darkest moments, we seek comfort in art; I created Bluegrass Junction to acknowledge the real-world tribulations and transformations our community has faced in recent years.”
Bluegrass Junction, while not true to one form of dance, is a nod to the many folk dances practiced throughout the United States, including square dancing, buck-and-wing, clogging, jigs, and reels. The roots of these dances have European, African, and Native American traditions. Many of the folk dances that inspired Bluegrass Junction are still practiced throughout the United States.
Performa/Dance will be joined by the great Tim Eriksen. Labeled by T Bone Burnett as “one of the best singers in music,” Eriksen is an internationally-acclaimed singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (guitar, banjo, fiddle, bajo sexto, kaval, bansuri) from Amherst, Massachusetts. Toronto Star called him, “A compelling artist whose intense delivery and clarity of tone sets him among the world’s finest folk practitioners,” and the BBC said of Eriksen, he’s “widely regarded as the best traditional American ballad singer of his generation.”
Accompanying Tim Eriksen will be members of the Wayside Bluegrass, an Austin-based Bluegrass band that performs a thrilling mix of traditional/contemporary bluegrass and Americana music. Featuring Jon Lundbom on banjo, Bo Tyler on guitar and vocals, Everett Wren on fiddle, and Kyle Kline on bass.
Bluegrass Junction will take place at the Austin Ventures Studio Theater at Ballet Austin August 14 at 7:30pm and August 15 at 4:30pm and 7:30pm.
Tickets go on sale July 1st, 2026, at performadance.org. Tickets can also be purchased the day of the event at the performance venue.
