The Royal Ballet School to host first summer Intensive Course in the U.S.
Our take
The announcement that The Royal Ballet School will host its first summer Intensive Course in the U.S. at The Music Center in Los Angeles marks a significant milestone not only for the institution but also for the landscape of ballet education in America. For nearly a century, this prestigious school has been synonymous with excellence in classical ballet training, nurturing the talents of dancers who go on to grace the stages of the world’s leading ballet companies. The introduction of this program in Los Angeles in the summer of 2026 reflects a growing recognition of the need for high-caliber training opportunities across the United States, and it opens the door for young dancers to learn from some of the best in the field without the need to travel abroad.
The importance of this initiative resonates deeply within the current dance community, which has seen an increasing emphasis on accessibility and inclusivity in the arts. As highlighted in articles like Dance takes center stage in Lincoln Center’s ‘Summer for the City’ and Book review: Gavin Larsen and Gene Schiavone’s ‘Infinite Steps: Thirty-three Dancers and Their Lives in Ballet’, there is a strong push towards creating environments where dancers of all backgrounds can thrive. By bringing its Intensive Course to a diverse city like Los Angeles, The Royal Ballet School not only expands its reach but also serves as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring dancers, particularly those from underrepresented communities.
Furthermore, this course offers a unique opportunity for young dancers to immerse themselves in a curriculum that is steeped in tradition while also encouraging personal expression. The Royal Ballet School’s commitment to fostering individual artistry, alongside technical perfection, is crucial in an era where the dance world is rapidly evolving. This program will allow students to explore their creativity and develop their unique voices, preparing them for the dynamic demands of modern ballet. In a city known for its vibrant arts scene, this initiative can also foster collaborations and innovations that might lead to new forms of dance, blending classical techniques with contemporary styles.
As we look ahead to 2026, it is essential to consider the broader implications of such a program for the future of ballet in America. Will this be the catalyst for more international institutions to set up similar training programs in the U.S.? The potential ripple effect could be profound, creating a network of elite training opportunities that not only elevate the standards of American ballet but also challenge the traditional gatekeeping that has often limited participation in this art form. As more young dancers gain access to world-class training, the hope is that we will see a richer tapestry of talent and creativity emerge, ultimately benefiting the entire dance community.
In conclusion, the decision by The Royal Ballet School to establish a summer Intensive Course in Los Angeles is more than just an educational opportunity; it is a pivotal moment that speaks to the evolving nature of ballet and its accessibility. As we approach this landmark event, it will be fascinating to observe how it shapes the next generation of dancers and influences the cultural landscape of ballet in the U.S. Will this initiative inspire similar programs, and how will it affect the careers of young dancers? The answers to these questions will undoubtedly shape the future of ballet for years to come.
