‘Winter’s Breath’ Headlines Dance NOW! Miami’s ‘Program I’

Our take

Get ready to embrace the magic of the season with Dance NOW! Miami's upcoming Program I, featuring the enchanting ballet "Winter’s Breath." As the sun shines bright in South Florida, this performance captures the essence of winter's chill through stunning choreography. Joining the celebration is the renowned Jon Lehrer Dance Company from New York, renowned for their dynamic and powerful modern dance style. This unforgettable evening promises to inspire and invigorate, inviting audiences to experience the beauty and artistry of dance in all its forms.

As the holiday season approaches, Dance NOW! Miami (DNM) is set to enchant audiences with their upcoming Program I, featuring the ballet *Winter’s Breath*. This performance is particularly significant as it captures the essence of winter through dance, bringing a refreshing perspective to the typically sunny South Florida atmosphere. With the collaborative efforts of DNM Co-Artistic Directors Hannah Baumgarten and Diego Salterini, the ballet is set to a reimagined score by Max Richter, originally composed by Antonio Vivaldi. The juxtaposition of winter’s chill against the warm backdrop of Miami serves as a beautiful metaphor for the diversity of experiences that dance can encapsulate, much like the narratives explored in the recent book review of *Infinite Steps: Thirty-three Dancers and Their Lives in Ballet*.

The inclusion of the Jon Lehrer Dance Company adds an exciting layer to the evening, showcasing a dynamic modern dance style that complements the classical elements of *Winter’s Breath*. This melding of styles highlights the versatility of dance as an art form, capable of bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary expressions. For those in attendance, this performance is not merely a spectacle; it is an opportunity to witness the evolution of dance and its capacity to convey powerful emotions and stories. Events like this resonate with the themes presented in the article about dance taking center stage in Lincoln Center’s *Summer for the City*, emphasizing how dance continues to thrive in various forms and settings.

Moreover, the timing of this performance aligns perfectly with the season of reflection and gratitude. As a society, we often find ourselves caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays. However, events like DNM's Program I invite us to slow down and appreciate the artistry and dedication that goes into each performance. Dance has the unique ability to evoke feelings of joy, nostalgia, and introspection, allowing audiences to connect with the performers on a deeper level. In a world where body positivity and self-acceptance are increasingly vital, the beauty of dance becomes a powerful reminder of the importance of embracing our own bodies and expressions.

As a fitness and wellness enthusiast, I firmly believe that the act of dancing—whether on stage or in the comfort of our homes—can serve as a transformative practice. It encourages individuals to feel empowered, confident, and sexy in their own skin. The artistry displayed in performances like *Winter’s Breath* not only inspires the audience but also motivates participants to engage with their bodies in ways that promote health and well-being. As we celebrate the artistry of dance this winter, we should also reflect on how it encourages a culture of body positivity and self-love.

Looking ahead, one must ponder how events like Dance NOW! Miami’s Program I can continue to shape our understanding of dance as a vehicle for change. Will more dance companies follow suit in blending various styles and narratives? As we move forward into the new year, the question remains: how can we harness the transformative power of dance to foster a more inclusive and body-positive community? With each performance, we have the opportunity to inspire not just ourselves but also those around us to embrace their individuality and celebrate the beauty of movement.

The sun may be shining, but Dance NOW! Miami (DNM) welcomes the chill of the South Florida holiday season with their upcoming Program I. It will feature Winter’s Breath, a ballet celebrating our coldest months, and special guest New York’s Jon Lehrer Dance Company to share the stage, featuring their dynamic, athletic and powerful modern dance style. The evening takes place Saturday, December 19 at the Coral Gable Sanctuary of the Arts.

Winter’s Breath is set to the striking sounds of Antonio Vivaldi, reimagined by Max Richter. It is a work of sweeping movement set to the crisp soundtrack and was created collaboratively by Dance NOW! Miami Co-Artistic Directors Hannah Baumgarten and Diego Salterini in 2015. The Jon Lehrer Dance Company will perform their piece, Here in Eden, a bold and poetic duet featuring Ricardo G. Barret and Cristiana Cavallo.

The one-night-only program also includes audience favorites: the evocative Point of Departure, the tender love duet from Havisham!, and Isadora Duncan’s timeless 1914 solo Ave Maria. Two new works round out the evening: the world premiere of Diego Salterini’s Deco-de, an Art Deco-inspired piece set to Gershwin’s “Lullaby” and inspired by the three archetypes of Jungian psychology, and a sneak preview of Hannah Baumgarten’s cabaret-style 1933, addressing the rise of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

“We not only excited to revive some of our repertory works, but also to have Jon’s company join us. We know he will excite South Florida audiences.” said Salterini. “And their entire company will be back in May to present a full concert!”

Dance NOW! Miami is one of Florida’s premier contemporary companies. Tickets for this special December 19 performance are $25 general admission / $15 students and seniors. Secure your seats now at www.dancenowmiami.org.
